Woodcarving in Konjic

Chisel-engraved poetry in wood

The tradition of woodcarving in Konjic dates back centuries, with the first written records appearing during the Austro-Hungarian period. Local craftsmen, discovered in nearby villages, transformed simple wooden objects into richly decorated works of art using only primitive tools. Their talent led to formal training in Sarajevo and the opening of the first workshops in Konjic in the early 1900s, marking the beginning of the town’s golden era of woodcarving. From then on, Konjic became the heart of a unique artistic craft that continues to thrive today.

Known as the Konjic-Bosnian style, this woodcarving tradition blends geometric and natural motifs, with every object carved entirely by hand. No two pieces are ever the same, as each carries the soul and creativity of its master. Recognized worldwide, Konjic woodcarving was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2017, confirming its status as a living art form worthy of preservation and admiration.
